FS visits biomedical firm in UK

Financial Secretary Paul Chan yesterday visited a biopharmaceutical company and the Royal College of Art, and attended a lunch hosted by the China-Britain Business Council, as part of his ongoing trip to London.   Mr Chan visited AstraZeneca and met the company’s senior management to learn about its drug research and development activities, as well as its latest expansion plans.   AstraZeneca indicated that following in-depth talks with Hong Kong’s Office for Attracting Strategic Enterprises, it plans to develop a research and development centre in Hong Kong and will engage in further discussion with relevant government departments on the matter.   The Financial Secretary then attended a roundtable luncheon held by the China-Britain Business Council, and met representatives of British enterprises that do business, or plan to do business, either in the Mainland or Hong Kong.   Mr Chan later visited the Royal College of Art, which collaborated with the Hong Kong Polytechnic Unive

COVID-19 jab case data issued

The Department of Health said today that in the preceding week ending July 11, it received 131 reports of adverse events following COVID-19 immunisation.   Among them, no death case was reported by the Hospital Authority involving individuals who had received vaccines within 14 days before they died and had potential association with vaccination.   As of 8pm on July 11, over 4.39 million doses of COVID-19 vaccines had been administered to the public.   The department received 4,210 reports of adverse events, 25 of which are death cases with vaccination within 14 days. The figures represented 0.1% and 0.0006% of the total vaccine doses administered.   As of July 11, the Expert Committee on Clinical Events Assessment Following COVID-19 Immunisation concluded that 13 death cases had no causal relationship with vaccination, and preliminarily considered that 10 cases were not associated with vaccination.   The committee considered that there is no unusual pattern identified so far, and will continue to closely monitor the situation and collect data for assessment.   According to information from the authority, during the period from June 14 to July 11, the ratio of death cases out of those without a vaccination record was 68.6 cases for every 100,000 people, whereas the ratio of death cases for those with a vaccination record was 3.0 cases for every 100,000 people. The overall death rate is similar to that recorded in the past three years.   Out of those without a vaccination record, the ratio of death cases with acute stroke or acute myocardial infarction was 3.6 cases for every 100,000 people, whereas the ratio of death cases under the same category for those with a vaccination record was 0.3 cases for every 100,000 people.   Furthermore, the ratio of miscarriage cases out of those without a vaccination record was 23.8 cases for every 100,000 people, whereas the ratio of miscarriage cases for those who had a vaccination record was 4.4 cases for every 100,000 people.   Based on the statistical analysis of the above figures, there is no evidence that vaccination increases the risk of death or miscarriage.   The relevant reference statistics will be uploaded to the COVID-19 Vaccination Programme thematic website.   The majority of non-death cases of adverse events received so far are relatively minor ones, details of which can be found here.
