Glorifying violence unacceptable

Police today strongly condemned blatant violence and those who attempted to romanticise or glorify the despicable act of the attempted murder of a police officer with seditious intent to incite hatred in society.   The force noticed messages circulating online that honoured and paid tribute to the attacker who attempted to murder a police officer and committed suicide last night.   Initial investigations indicated that the case was a lone wolf-style act of domestic terrorism in which the attacker was believed to be radicalised by a myriad of fake information. He committed suicide afterwards.   Police pointed out that the attack was a clear threat to society's safety and a disregard for the rule of law, adding that no violent behaviour will be tolerated and resolute enforcement action will continue to be taken to safeguard public safety and order.   The force is actively gathering intelligence and stepping up patrols across the city, including the crime scene. People are encouraged to report any crime information to Police immediately.   According to section 9 and 10 of the Crimes Ordinance, any person who does or attempts to do, or makes any preparation to do, or conspires with any person to do, any act with a seditious intention, shall be guilty of an offence and is liable to a fine of $5,000 and imprisonment for two years.   Taking part in an unlawful assembly may also breach relevant offences under the Public Order Ordinance and is liable to a maximum penalty of five years' imprisonment.
